I have been a paper doll collector since I was 5 years old. I try to limit the items to pre 1949, but there is always something that catches my eye and ends up in my collection, especially from the modern day artists.
I also am a paper doll artist, make my own greeting cards and design in crochet, and at rare times will write poetry. Over the years I have tried just about every type of craft or needlework there is. My eyes are slowing down so now I am only doing paper doll art work and making my own cards.
I have saved greeting cards and have lots of personal ephemera. Seems anything paper that has lovely art on it ends up in a box somewhere in my home. I even collect pictures of peoples faces that appeal to me.
I like to read light hearted woman detective mysteries, called “cozy mysteries” . Have boxes of paperbacks but every couple of years will re-read them.
I work full time as a comptroller for a small manufacturing company.
I want say a big and great thanks to you !!! I love your site ! I have saved many and many pictures.
Sorry, my English is not good. I am from Estonia.
I love paper dolls and these old greeting cards. I draw paperdolls itself. Some you see in my Picasa pages.http://picasaweb.google.com/Liivilaas
Nice day and hugs!!!!!!!
Hi Liivi – Thank you for the comment. I just spent some time on your blog and wow it is terrific. My favorite so far is Lil Yan and her cat is great.
People if you want to see her paper dolls go to Liivi’s site. She also has lots of the paper dolls from the Haute doll magazine.
I really enjoy your site. What are the rules for making
copies?
Thank you.
Sheila – I try to post items from magazines or that are out of print. If there is something you would like to make a copy for your own personal use that is fine. Most all printed items are copyrighted. So please do not sell anything you find on my blog or claim it as your own work. Happy you are enjoying my blog. I try to make it interesting to all.
A person may NOT make copies, even for personal use, of paper dolls which have a current copyright. This is illegal. If an artist’s work appears in a magazine, and then you post it here for people to print out and play with, you are infringing on their copyright and stealing from them, as well as from the publishers of the magazine. This does not, of course, apply to antique or vintage work that’s fallen out of copyright protection.
Marge, would you mind if I added you to the blogroll on my blog?
not at all, I am honored that you would like to add me. Have a lovely day.
Question: in the late 50’s I had a set of front/back paper dolls that had “real” hair. The hair was actually fluffy yarn. The clothes of course fit back and front. My father threw them out one day….I haven’t seen anything since…..have you?
I’ve added a new set of paper dolls to my blog….Canadian Paper Rag Dolls.
Susan – once in a while, on e-bay, I will see them in the auction and in some of the paper doll dealers stores. I have some reference books I will try to get to and see if I can find a picture to post for you.
Susan, once in a great while, as I only go on this site then, I see them on e-bay on the auction. Also if you check out some of the paper doll dealer stores you might see them.
I have some reference books I will try to get to and will post a picture if I can find them for you.
I like your Canadian Rag Dolls paper dolls. Really cute
I have added you to my blogroll….
Why have you taken out my post?
Charley, I am sorry, but anything to do with an advertisement I do not post to my blog. This is just a sharing of my collections between friends and people who enjoy paper dolls or greeting cards. Marge
Marlendy,
I love your blog!
I have a question… When I was little (born in 1951) my mom gave us permanents and there were paper dolls included with the permanent papers, curlers and chemicals.
Do you remember what they were called?
Do you know where I might be able to see some examples of them?
Thanks so much!
Maureen Brady Johnson
Maureen these are new to me, I have never heard nor seen them. Maybe someone else who looks at the blog can come up with an answer for you. How about it people = anyone know anything about this item? We need some help here. Marge
I just came across your site yesterday(and spent 4 hours then another couple today) – I love it; thank you so much for posting it – I have it bookmarked so I can come back often.
I am raising and home schooling my 5 yr old granddaughter; we use ‘cutouts’ from books, magazines and the computer(copies), laminate them and use them on our ‘door’ board to aid with our lesson plans- we started using paper dolls a while ago and I’m glad to report that Rae is as addicted to paper dolls as I am.
You have such a great variety.
Some we will laminate to add to our collection and others I will just save because I too have some kind of paper fetish…
and things just ‘strike a certain cord with me’
Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Diane – glad you enjoyed the blog. It has been a lot of fun doing it. I was 5 when I first started my paper doll collecting. Wow, we have something in common, a paper fetish. One of mine if collecting pictures from magazines of faces that appeal to me, human, doll, young, old. Another is pictures of lovely places, gardens, flowers, old fashion houses with all their gables and dormers, sea scenes, art what ever catches my eye. Then of course there are the patterns that someday I am going to make, I do not sew, but love crochet, and most types of needlework. I could go on and on. Marge
Marge – people faces, especially eyes; beautiful places, especially trees (particularity ‘lone’ trees) and wide open spaces (fields, water, sand, mountain side); castles, doors and gates; art of all kinds – YES.
I was a self employed seamstress for 38 years – eyes and hands giving me a bit of resistance–
Just learned to oil paint this summer – had over a month of personal lessons from my instructor/artist brother which I hadn’t seen in many years, and we spent about every minute we could ‘catching up’ and painting – it was great.
Hubby and I have been raising all 5 grandchildren for over 5 years but there are only two at home at the moment – Rae(5) and James (19 in less than a month).
I spend a lot of time on ‘crafting & FUN’, I like it and I do a lot of it now – My hubby and I have a traffic control business and I use to love to be out ‘on the road’ – but alas, I had 10 heart attacks over an 18 month period and am not allowed back to work till I’ve been ‘attack-free’ for one year – it’s been 8 months now…
Any way – my computer is gifted from son – I use it a lot but almost never ‘chat’ with anyone – once in a while some one ‘catches my eye’ and I am drawn to them; I learned to follow my instincts a long time ago — want to be friends?
Diane – I would love to be friends. I will send you an e-mail, we have a lot in common. Marge
Hi Marge – I stumbled across your blog searching for paper dolls. I loved looking at it so much I was inspired to start one of my own! I’m still feeling my way and don’t know how to generate any traffic but I’m having a lot of fun!
I was wondering if you can remember a double sided wedding paper doll from the 60’s? It was very clever as it produced two lovely wedding parties with different colour schemes. I think I’ve found a reproduction that takes elements of of the original and combines them into one set, but I haven’t found any reference back to the original itself. I can’t remember what it was called but I think it came in a box.
Welcome Sharon – I just peeked at your blog and WOW!!!!! You are sure doing a terrific job. I am the wrong person to ask about posting pictures of followers as I am still asking myself that question on how to do it.
Marilyn – this question about the double sided wedding paper doll
from the 60″s is for you, you are the wedding collector, any helpful answers for Sharon.
Sharon – okay if I link your site on my blog? I love paper dolls, fairies, elves, spirites and fantasy, it takes a while but I bet with word of mouth you will have lots of people looking at your blog.
Thanks so much for helping me try to track down the paper dolls Marge. I think its wonderful that people with the same interests (and from all over the world!) are able to help each other recapture such lovely memories from the past like this.
And gosh! I’m extremely honoured that you would want to link to my site!
Just found your site today through a posting on a paper doll group. Love the Hilda Miloche elves. Wish I had more time to check out more on your site today. I will be back. Thank you for posting. I adore paperdolls and have since I was first able to hold a pair of scissors.
Linda – welcome aboard, there are a lot more paper dolls to post yet and I have been so bad about posting the greeting cards lately. I had such plans to make some Valentines to share on the blog, but I am so tired lately when I come home, I just lay down and read. Will try do better with St. Patricks and Easter coming up. What type paper dolls do you collect or do you? Marge
Hello
Just found your site through a search for “Winnie Winkle” an old but continued comic strip since 1920. Google image was of a Winnie Winkle paper doll not know date 1930?-however I did not see it on your blog. Thank you
Jaye
I think you have more spam….under the Linda Evans paper doll ….. gotta luv it 🙂
HI Susan – not spam that is one of our readers from Denmark telling us what magazine the paper doll was from.
I have a technical question for you and I’m not sure how else to get it to you… I was wondering how much space WordPress allows for images posted to your blog? If this is a bad place to post the question I’m sorry, but I don’t know how else to ask.
Corissia – I really do not know the answer, I have been posting since the middle of June 2009 am I am still going. I suggest you key in http://www.wordpress.com on your internet and the first page has some help items there. They are very helpful and friendly people. Guess this is something I should think about also. Marge
Hi Marge – I don’t know if anyone have told you yet, but Henny Iversen (the little cat) is a danish artist.
If you want to learn more her website is: http://www.hennydesign.dk
Tove
Hi Tove – Thank you for letting me know about Henny Iversen web site. I visited it and really like her work. Thank you again for sharing this information. Marge
Hi Marge
In January I posted a question asking if you had ever come across a double sided wedding paper doll. I thought you might be interested to hear that I have finally had success tracking it down and was able to buy a copy of the book a couple of weeks ago. I have chosen it as my blog entry for this week.
I enjoy your blog tremendously and still consider it the main inspiration that got me started on mine!
Sharon
Wow Sharon – how wonderful to find what you were looking for. Will go to your blog and see as soon as I get off here. It is getting harder and harder to find the older paper dolls and when a collector from years ago passes away it seems the family has an auction house do it and the prices are so high then. Marge
Hi Marge!
I discovered your blog 2 days ago and have spent that time going through ALL your posts and trying to keep my squeals of delight to a minimum (it upsets the dog) 🙂 Thank you so much for this great reference and record of an art form that isn’t appreciated as it should be anymore, and thank you again for putting up big sacns so that the pictures can be seen in their glory!
I did my collecting in the mid-70s to early 80s and they are still all gathered in their special box in a cupboard in my parents’ home. Whenever I find a paper doll site, it’s in the hopes that I’ll find some of my childhood favourites (in addition to all the wonderful new discoveries). I have so many ideas of my own for PD; really should get going on those some day!
Thought you might enjoy this personal piece I did a few years ago: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aiar/sets/72057594059680701/with/95664045/. A lot of work and a LOT of fun.
Keep dolling! you’re on my watch list now 😉
Hello Submerina! You definitely should do some more paper dolls, what a wonderful idea to put the photos with the outfits and you sayings/thoughts, hope you have forgiven your parents by now. I enjoyed looking t the entire book. Get busy and do some more. Thanks for sharing with us on my blog. Marge
Huh! What a find! My screen name at most places is Margie8. I accidentally typed in your name and found this, and what a treasure. I have never thought to use paper dolls in my crafting, even though I loved them as a child. Now, my mind is going bonkers!
Hello Margie – am so glad you typed my name accidentally – it is nice to meet new people all the time. I collect, design and draw paper dolls, and love belonging to the round robins. Guess I am just a frustrated fashion designer. You certainly do not look old enough to have 8 children and grandchildren also. Hope you check in on us again soon.
Hi Marge – yesterday I received a One Lovely Blog Award. One of the requirements of accepting is to nominate 5 blogs in return. I know you already have one of these awards but there was no way I could not include you in my list. Your paper dolls are still the best I have ever found online and your blog will always be a favourite of mine as the original inspiration that got me started in the first place almost a year ago! The details of the award are on my blog. I hope you enjoy getting another one! Sharon (http://sharonssunlitmemories.blogspot.com/)
Hi Marge!
Just got your Christmas card today – had no idea you had a blog so am signing up. Googled “Margery Schaffer paper dolls” and there you were! I will have to look around to see if I have any extras of that straw card. Since I moved in with my dad a lot of my stuff is in storage now, so I don’t know if I do or if they are accessible. Will look though.

I have drawn a new doll, all in photoshop with my Wacom Bamboo … Snow White with Steam Punk Attitude … I’ve posted the first part on my blog … thought you might like a peak http://cottonartsboutique.com
Love your site, I’ spent many an hour just enjoying!
I wondered, have you ever heard of a Danish artist named Bente Bledsoe? I have a number of her scans, and I was wondering if you might know if she is still producing. I have tried searching a number of times and only found dead links. Thanks for any info.
Katy Carroll – will see what I can find out, friends if anyone knows the answer to this it would be greatly appreciated if you would send it in under comments, or you can e-mail me at margeryschaffer@bellsouth.net and I will put it on the blog.
Awesome blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers? I’m hoping to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely confused .. Any suggestions? Kudos!
Emerica – only suggestion I have is write about something you know about, I collect paper items so that is why my blog is for paper items, it is something I have here to show and share and much knowledge about. Marge
How do you make your blog look this cool!? Email me if you get the chance and share your wisdom. Id appreciate it.
I am looking for the title of a particular paperdoll book and was wondering if you might know, since you are a collector. It was very similar to the Golden Books Miss America and quite possbly published around the same time but it was 4 girls/women and tons of clothing for them. I would really appreciate if you happen to know the name or could put me in touch with someone who could help. Thank you.
Hello there, I discovered your web site by the use of Google at the same time as searching for a comparable matter, your
web site came up, it appears great. I’ve bookmarked it in my google bookmarks.
Hello there, just became alert to your weblog through Google, and found that it’s truly
informative. I’m going to watch out for brussels. I will be grateful should you proceed this in future. A lot of folks shall be benefited out of your writing. Cheers!
I am 18 years old and I am in love with the old times! Nowadays you can see a lot of pointless webs, however I really like yours one, I havent seen something like this before. Its very nice 🙂
I just want to tell you that I am just all new to blogging and site-building and really savored your web blog. Likely I’m likely to bookmark your site . You amazingly have amazing articles. Thanks a bunch for revealing your web-site.
I was looking up Keith O. Henderson when I came across your blog. My mother in law was Emma Terry, an avid paper doll collector and editor of a small publication called Paper Doll News. She passed away in 2010 after a lengthy illness. Currently I am in the process of cataloging her collection in hopes it can be sold, either as a whole or in individual pieces. The collection is quite large and I have been working on this for a month with no end in sight. Is there a way to publicize to other collectors that this collection is for sale? If so please let me know. Emma Terry spent her entire life collecting, researching and designing paper dolls. While her three sons have no interest in the collection they appreciate the fact that their mother poured her life into this collection and touched many lives doing so. They want this collection to go to collectors who will appreciate this collection as much as she did.
Hi I just wanted to say that I love your blog! I would love to add you to my links for my pageant site. Little Miss Imfamous Pageants @ http://lilmissimfamous.web.com/
Would this be okay with you?
Sophia – Nice to meet you thru the blog, you are welcome to add me to you links.
Hello, I have just recently found you blog and am addicted. I have had a window always open to it for the last several days since finding it. THANK YOU so much for So carefully maintaining.. collecting, and generously sharing your passion. I am planning to share this new addiction with others I know will love your blog too.
I am having difficulty seeing the Ukrainian Doll Galya you write about. My family has a strong Ukrainian heritage and I am excited to see the costumes. Only a narrow bar appears with the file address, but when I click on it I get a “file not found” error message.
Is this common, and hopefully easy to remedy? I see many of the sets right on your blog, but those, as well as some others only come up as the file bar mentioned.
I could send you a screen-shot if it would help.
I am browsing from my Android phone, does that have an impact?
I do some painting and am feeling inspired to create a set myself. They just are so much fun. Of course I would love to share it with you.
Thanks again, and nice ‘meeting’ you,
Diane Hawreschuk
Enjoy your blog. Hope you will soon be feeling better. Love and prayers, Jackie
Hello Marlendy,
I found the Japanese kimono dolls on your site and want to use them as for a Photoshop course I’m taking at the junior college in Visalia, CA. The assignment is to “color” a black and white drawing. Obviously, I will first upload the images to my computer first, then “remove” the color from the paper doll picture in the computer program and then re-color it. This is a project strictly for a class assignment and we site our sources for the imagery we find. I show the professor the before and after so he sees the original and then the work we’ve done.
I used to play with paper dolls when I was a young girl growing up in a country town here in the San Joaquin Valley of California … and now here I am, a grown woman … still playing with paper dolls : – )
Thanks for posting!
Laura Brown – you are welcome to us the kimono dolls for your photo shop course- just remember a lot of these paper dolls are copyrighted so do not sell them. Marge
Hi Marlendy,
tahnk you for your great blog! I have a question regarding the Betty Grable Paper Doll by Shackman: Do you have a scan that is of (even) higher quality? We would like to use it for a theatre piece (non-commercial) and would need to enlarge it a bit, and as it is now it gets very pixelated.
Thank you very much for your help and for putting up all these interesting and rare pieces.
Best from Germany
Fee If you let me know the date of the post you are referring to I can may be take it to where they have professional printers and scanners – My printer is new and I still do not know how to adjust item on it. Marge
I was searching the net and ran across two items that you seem to have posted back in 2012 they were of a Mr. and Mrs. Claus that were standing cut-out figures. I would love to have copies of these but they have disappeared from your site. Is it possible to repost them? Or could you email copies to me?
Thank you,
Sissie A.
Sissie – I AM HAving a hARD time finding my original work, but don’t give up have more places to look. Marge
I grew up in the 40’s and loved playing paper dolls. I now live in The Villages, FL. and wondered if there are any paper doll groups in FL. I thought about starting a group here, but not sure if anyone would be interested. Love your site. Sarah
Hi Marge, I’m having a problem and hope that you can help me. I signed on to your wonderful blog several years ago and have enjoyed it so much. But for the past couple of months I’m not getting any email from you with paperdolls. When I tried to sign up again, it says that I’m already signed on. I’ve checked my spam file and there is nothing from you there. I don’t know what else I can do. Do you have any suggestions? Maybe if you tell me how to unsubscribe and then subscribe again that might work, what do you think? Many thanks for your help and for all of the wonderful paperdolls that I’ve enjoyed.
Patricia
Hi Marge, I wrote to you last on 8-31-14 about the fact that I’m not getting posts from you since last summer when I had to buy a new computer. In fact, I’m reading my post of that date just above where I’m writing to you again. I haven’t heard from you and it just says that my comment is awaiting moderation. Could you help me please so that I will continue to get your wonderful paper doll blog as I did in the past? My email addy is kleineoma@aol.com if you need to send me an email letting me know what to do. Thank you so much for your help.
Patricia
